10-11-15 // UP, AROUND, AND ACROSS
With its sculptural form the new bridge will not only intertwine the city with the Garden Festival, but also mark the entrance of the city
Reorganization
The planned roundabout offers the possibility of carrying out further construction work: a pedestrian and bicycle bridge crossing the square and a parking garage below the square. To further upgrade the area, we also propose a so-called “Rheinforum”, an open-air theater, a café, a ticket office, city balconies and an improved network of pedestrian and bicycle routes.
Entrance
With its sculptural form the new bridge will not only intertwine the city with the Garden Festival, but also mark the entrance of the city. While crossing the bridge a 360 ° panoramic view of the city and its surroundings will be made possible for the visitors. In order to announce information, the bridge can function additionally as a media wall.
Car park
We think that the quality of the green area of the site can be improved more effectively with an open-air theatre and better pedestrian and bicycle paths than with a car park. A parking garage would, for example, create further barriers and limit views. This is why we propose a 3-storey car park, for 220 parking spaces, next to the site and directly under the roundabout.

Bicycle and pedestrian paths
With the new bridge a barrier-free connection between the city and the Garden Festival as well as the existing bicycle and footpath network will be realized. To avoid new barriers the two exits of the bridge will be located at the edge of the site and the green spaces. The two stairs, the one in the south with a lift that is suitable for bikes, will allow a shorter crossing of the bridge.
Open-air theatre
An important part of our new urban development plan is an open-air theatre for music, theatre, film, or performances. In this theatre the opening ceremony of the Garden Festival, or classical concerts could take place transforming the entire surrounding green space, together with the “city balconies” and benches, into a large auditorium.
